Lake Petenwell, Wisconsin’s 2nd Largest Lake!

Created by Wisconsin River Power Company in the 1940s, Lake Petenwell is Wisconsin’s second largest body of water at 23,000-Acres in size and over 100 miles of shoreline. With it’s abundance of water, firm-sandy bottom and numerous recreation opportunities, Lake Petenwell is a major attraction in Central Wisconsin. During the summer months, Lake Petenwell county parks are a popular tourist destination where generations have come to enjoy the fantastic fishing, sand beaches, and unlimited boating activities.  Located just 40 minutes north of The Wisconsin Dells, Lake Petenwell lies between Adams and Juneau Counties.

Recreation On Lake Petenwell:

Boating is great for all recreational, sailing, or fishing boats. Many families enjoy a sunset cruise on a pontoon boat. Sailing Regattas are also popular usually departing out of the Barnum Bay Marina.  With many quiet coves and inlets along the lakes beautiful, wooded shoreline, tranquility and solitude are always easy to find on Petenwell. For the water sport enthusiast, swimming, waterskiing, tubing, and jet skiing are a blast on Petenwell where there is enough lake that you don’t disturb the fisherman and have your own slice of the pie to carve up. Up for a little adventure, boat north out of Lake Petenwell up the Wisconsin River all the way to the dam in Nekoosa. You’ll find many tributaries and inlets to explore or fish and a few sand bars where many friends like to catch up on a hot summer day. Keep your eye open for a rope swing or two.

Fishing On Lake Petenwell:

Lake Petenwell offers a tremendous fishery for Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, White Bass, Walleye, Northern Pike and Muskie. Several large fishing tournaments occur on the lake throughout the year including the spring Musky Tournament and Walleye Tournaments. Hiring a professional fishing guide is a great way to explore all of the opportunities on Lake Petenwell. The spring Walleye run is attended by hundreds from around the country. Be sure to register for the Nekoosa Walleye Days where Walleye over 28″ are registered for the annual tournament.
